MOTHER'S SILENCE
.webp)
Fiction, Am Oved, 2026
Michal Govrin, a novelist, poet, essayist, and theater director, uses her skills to create a polyphonic book: a memoir, a historical novel, a children’s book, a chorus of voices – to reveal “the silence” of her mother – an exceptional woman who, even amidst the greatest horrors, fought for her humanity, protected her young son until he was brutally murdered, and sustained her friends in the death camps. After liberation, she commanded the smuggling of refugees to the Land of Israel, and upon her arrival, she removed the number tattooed on her arm.
What could have been a Holocaust book, like many already written, reveals itself as a tempestuous journey, external and internal, breaking literary conventions and gaining momentum and depth from chapter to chapter.
