All 13-year-old Ari Rosensweig wants is to be able to look in the mirror and not see a fat kid. On the eve of his (already late) Bar Mitzvah, he's sick of being teased, bullied, and feeling like an outsider because of the way he looks. After a brutal bullying incident before summer break, Ari decides he's had enough. He's got to lose the weight before school starts again. But he doesn’t know how.
Ari's parent's relationship has been on the rocks for a while, but when June comes around, his dad disappears for good. His mom is an artist, and she moves the two of them out of the city to turn an open an old nursery at the beach into an art gallery and studio. Things come to a head after Ari self-harms, and his mom realizes that she must do something to help him make a change. Ari starts his quest to reinvent himself no matter what it takes, and with the help of a few friends, and a few special books, the transformation begins. By the end of the summer Ari realizes that he has to find a way to love himself inside and out.
Set in the San Francisco Bay Area, WEIGHT tells a coming of age story about finding the courage to be yourself, and dealing squarely with what it means to be an overweight boy.
“Ari Rosensweig is a truly original character who's struggling with his weight. He wants to make a change while also remaining true to himself. This wonderfully-crafted book is all heart, and I can't wait to see it get into the hands of teachers and librarians and, most importantly, young readers. This one is special.” - Matt de la Peña, New York Times Bestselling, Newberry Medal-winning author of LOVE and LAST STOP ON MARKET STREET
