THE QUEEN UNDERNEATH
By: FILAK, Stacey
When the King of Above and the Queen of Under are both murdered on the same day, Gemma Antos meets Tollan Daghan in the tunnels under the city of Yigris. She was on her way to the Black Chamber to meet with the King of Above, and he was on his way to find the Queen of Under. Neither heir-apparent expects to find the other there, and suddenly, the fiery Gemma finds herself rescuing the timid Tollan, as he is accused by his brother of murdering the King.
In this reverse retelling of the story of Sleeping Beauty, flaming brambles grow in both Above and Under as the city of Yigris is put to sleep by mages who are out for blood. Gemma and Tollan were supposed to be asleep too. But they’re not. And now they need to rely on one another to save their city and the people they love.
When Gemma least expects it, betrayal comes from the one person she trusted more than anyone else – Devery Nightsbane, her lover and the Under’s Master Assassin. And as Tollan finds himself dragged through the whorehouses and dark tunnels of the Under, led by a woman whose destructive streak might just be the death of him, he finds love in the most unlikely of places – and not with Gemma, but with her best friend Elam, a whore-priest of the Yigrisian church. The Under is not at all what he thought it would be.
At times humorous and heart-wrenching, at times a stern commentary on the social politics of their world and ours, THE QUEEN UNDERNEATH is a fast-paced tale of betrayal and blood with echoes of Erika Johansen’s THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING and Leigh Bardugo’s SIX OF CROWS.
