Middle Grade, Forthcoming 2018
WINTERHOUSE is a middle grade novel with elements of magical realism and a gothic feel, reminiscent of Laura Amy Schlitz’s SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS and Jacqueline West’s BOOKS OF ELSEWHERE series.
To thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Somers, a surprise “vacation” at the apparently dreary Winterhouse Hotel seems like yet another punishment cooked up by her cruel aunt and uncle. Yet, upon arrival, she finds herself quite taken with the opulent and festive Winterhouse—and above all, its massive library.
But as she prepares to give herself over to the charms of ice skating, skiing, a budding friendship with fellow thirteen-year-old visitor (and whiz inventor) Freddy Knox, and days reading books by the fire, Elizabeth comes to recognize that the hotel’s aged proprietor, Norbridge Falls, seems intent on concealing something worrisome from his guests.
When she finds a curious book hidden somewhere in the vast library, Elizabeth slowly understands she may be the only person who can solve the puzzle in the book, and in turn, resolve a deadly conflict that pits Norbridge against his long-lost twin sister, the evil sorceress Gracella Winters.
As Elizabeth penetrates deeper into the mysteries of Winterhouse, she finds she will need to use all her courage and wits to save not only the people she has come to care for, but Winterhouse itself.
